Programs & ServicesHealth
The goal of Volunteers of America Bay Area’s Health Services Program is to develop and implement culturally competent, compassionate and effective prevention and care programs to reduce the rate of HIV/AIDS infection in our community. Volunteers of America Bay Area strives to achieve its mission by providing health and wellness services including outreach, testing, advocacy, education, and prevention serving men and women.
HIV Counseling, Testing and Referral
Provides individuals with current information on HIV/AIDS, and other sexually transmitted diseases. This service is provided at various venues ranging from parks to nightclubs. We provide safer sex kits including condoms, lubes and hygiene materials. In addition to providing information, we provide over 400 free HIV counseling, testing and referral per year. We now provide FREE walk-in testing at our downtown office location.
HIV Education & Prevention
Offers education and prevention classes on risk reduction techniques, develop prevention plan and community social support. This service is provided at community-based agencies, transitional housing program, parolee housing program, and youth court. Our goal is to help clients address behaviors that could put them in contact with the HIV virus and practical ways through which they can reduce their risk for HIV infection
Comprehensive Risk Counseling Services
Volunteers of America Bay Area's Comprehensive Risk Services Counselor is California State certified and is a Risk Reduction Health Educator experienced in assisting clients with development of skills in safer-behavior negotiation. The one-on-one relationship with the counselor will include education about the virus and development of risk reduction plans, peer feedback and support to incorporate behavior change.
Group Program Intervention
The group program intervention comprises the Many Men Many Voices Center for Disease Control and Prevention model to work with men of color to become educated about HIV risks and sensitized to how it impacts them personally. This model allows for an important, in-depth exploration into the critical psychosocial dynamics relating to identity, community, and society.
