February 22, 2007 - Volunteers of America Bay Area will hold its 21st Annual Operation Good Neighbor Holiday Food Basket event on Saturday, November 18th to provide Thanksgiving food baskets to 2000 seniors, disabled persons and disadvantaged families throughout the Bay Area.
Volunteers of America will showcase its newly renovated Lord Tennyson affordable housing community for low-income families at a news briefing on February 26 at the Lord Tennyson housing community in Hayward. Over $33 million was invested in the 252-unit affordable housing community to address the needs of the residents and contribute to the overall quality of housing in the City of Hayward. Volunteers of America is one of the largest nonprofit providers of affordable housing in the country, and the renovation of Lord Tennyson Apartments is part of a national effort to address the country’s affordable housing crisis for low-income seniors, families, and people with disabilities.
The Lord Tennyson affordable housing community provides 252 two, three and four-bedroom apartments for low-income families who are at or below 50 percent of the area’s median income level. The renovation process was funded by federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credits and tax-exempt Private Activity Bonds to provide needed upgrades and major energy efficiency improvements to the interior and exterior of the housing community, including the replacement of windows and doors, the conversion from master gas and electric metering to individual metering, and improvements to the parking area, playground, and community room. Nationally, Volunteers of America owns and operates more than 300 affordable housing communities in 31 states that are home to more than 20,000 people, and has more than 3,000 additional units of affordable housing in pre-development and development.
