Oakland, July 9, 2002 - Major League Baseball players and Volunteers of America Bay Area today announced they have formed a national and local partnership to help children and youth in the Bay Area.
The program, a partnership with the Major League Baseball Players Trust for Children and Volunteers of America called “Share with a Child,” will promote and support the nurturing and well being of America’s children.
Theodora Marzouk, Chair, Board of Directors of Volunteers of America Bay Area, said, “We are very pleased to be teaming with major league baseball players because this partnership will help Volunteers of America Bay Area rally community support and engagement so we can reach out and help a growing number of children and youth in our community.”
Charles Gould, Volunteers of America national president said, “It’s very exciting to have major league baseball players working with children and youth in their communities through Volunteers of America programs. The potential for helping children and youth build productive and successful lives is tremendous.”
John Bailey, Bay Area’s President/CEO said “We are thrilled about the opportunity to expand our services to children and youth in the Bay Area. We have some exhilarating times before us and wonderful opportunities to promote positive experiences for our youth.”
Volunteers of America Bay Area provides school supplies to children at the beginning of each school year, and partners with Oakland Public Schools’ Transitional Families Education Program and the City of Oakland’s Head Start Programs.
Volunteers of America is a national, nonprofit, spiritually based organization providing local human service programs, and opportunities for individual and community involvement. Last year the organization served 1.4 million people. Web site: www.voaba.org.
The Players Trust for Children, established in 1996, became the first charitable foundation of its kind in professional sports – established and administered by the players themselves. In partnership with national and local child-serving organizations, The Players Trust for Children serves thousands of children annually and administers grants to worthy causes benefiting children.
